Assisting Someone Who Has Fallen Safely

Assisting Someone Who Has Fallen Safely

As the fall season arrives, we believe it’s crucial to discuss falls and balance-related topics over the next couple of months. In this blog post, we’ll focus on assisting someone who has fallen but is not injured. When a person falls, it’s essential to approach this situation with care to prevent any harm to the person who has fallen, or the person providing assistance.

Assisting Someone Who Has Fallen Safely

When someone falls, your primary concern should be their safety and well-being. Here are some steps to follow when helping someone who has fallen but isn’t injured:

1. Check for Injuries

Begin by asking the fallen individual if they hit their head, lost consciousness, or are experiencing any pain. If any of these factors are present, or if you have any concerns, don’t hesitate to contact emergency services (call 911) for immediate assistance.

2. Prepare to Assist

To assist the person safely, you can use a gait belt if available. A gait belt is a helpful tool for lifting without straining your back or causing injury to the fallen individual. If you don’t have a gait belt, you can use a sturdy belt or strap from a bag.

3. Position a Chair

If you have a sturdy chair nearby, use it to help the fallen person get up. If not, bring a chair or other piece of furniture to them. Proper positioning is crucial. Place the chair in front of the fallen individual.

4. Half-Kneeling Pivot

Help the fallen person onto their hands and knees. Stand behind them for support, keeping your hands on their waist or hips. Make sure the chair is close enough for them to reach easily.

5. Assist Gently

Assist the person in shifting their weight forward, allowing them to place one foot flat on the floor. Encourage them to use their arms to push up from the floor while you provide support at their waist or hips.

6. Sit Them in the Chair

Once they are in a stable position on one leg, help them pivot and sit in the chair.

7. Avoid Pulling or Yanking

Never pull on the fallen person’s arms or yank them abruptly. Encourage them to do as much as they can to avoid injury. Your role is to provide support and guidance.

In situations where someone has fallen but is not injured, it’s crucial to assist them safely to prevent any harm. By following these steps and using a gait belt or a sturdy strap, you can provide valuable assistance without risking injury to yourself or the fallen individual. Remember to prioritize their comfort and safety at all times.

If you have any questions about this or other fall and balance-related topics or outpatient care, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. Your well-being and safety are our top priorities.

Top 7 Safety Products Every Senior Needs for Independence

As we age, maintaining our safety and independence becomes increasingly essential. Fortunately, a variety of specially designed products can significantly enhance seniors’ daily lives. In this article, we’ll examine the top seven safety products that every senior needs to maintain their independence. Each product was carefully chosen by Kathy Kirby, Executive Director at Nye Home Health Care with over 23 years of experience as an Occupational Therapist specializing in senior care.

Top 7 Safety Products Every Senior Needs for Independence

Reachers

Reachers are invaluable tools for seniors with limited mobility. These reacher/grabber devices come in various sizes, but regardless of the size you choose, the RMS Grabber Reacher makes life easier by helping seniors access items that would otherwise be out of reach. This reduces the risk of falls and minimizes the need to strain or bend excessively, promoting both safety and independence.

Foot Funnel

Putting on shoes can be a daily struggle for aging adults with limited flexibility or back problems. The Foot Funnel keeps the back of the shoe open, which helps seniors slide their foot in without a struggle. This simple device significantly enhances daily convenience for seniors.

Walker Glides

Walker glides are a superior alternative to the traditional tennis balls often seen on the rear legs of walkers. These Universal Replacement Coaster Glides offer smooth and silent movement, reducing friction and making it easier for seniors to move around independently. They also protect floors from scuffs and damage and last longer than tennis balls.

Bed Cane

Seniors often face challenges when transitioning in and out of bed, increasing dependence on others for help. The Stander BedCane provides peace of mind and a sturdy, reliable handle for seniors to grasp while getting in and out of bed. This added stability can boost seniors’ confidence and independence.

Rubber Gloves

Seniors with weak hands may struggle with everyday tasks such as putting on socks. Gardening gloves with latex fingertips provide added grip, making it easier to grip clothing and other items. This practical solution is a great way for seniors to maintain their dressing independence.

Shower Seat

Traditional shower chairs can be cumbersome and impractical in small shower stalls. The Carex Compact Shower Stool offers a space-saving solution while providing a safe place to sit during showers. This ensures that seniors can maintain their personal hygiene independently without the risk of slipping or falling.

Car Transfer Handle

Getting in and out of a car can be a significant challenge for seniors, especially those with mobility issues. The Stander HandyBar provides a secure and sturdy handle that attaches to the car door latch. This simple grab bar device makes entering and exiting a vehicle much easier, promoting seniors’ mobility and independence.

These carefully selected safety products for seniors cater to various needs, from assisting with daily tasks to enhancing mobility and preventing falls. Safety products made with aging adults in mind empower seniors to maintain independence while staying safe in their homes and daily lives.

What is the Secret to Healthy Old Age?

What is the Secret to Healthy Old Age?

Aging is a natural part of life, and as we grow older, we all hope for the same thing – to age gracefully and enjoy a high quality of life. But what is the secret to a healthy old age? Is there a magic formula that can ensure we live our golden years to the fullest? At Nye Health Services, we’ve been committed to helping older adults thrive for over three decades. In this article, we’ll explore some of the key factors that contribute to a fulfilling and healthy old age.

What is the Secret to Healthy Old Age?

Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle

One of the fundamental secrets to healthy aging is adopting a healthy lifestyle. This includes a balanced diet (healthy fats, fruits, and vegetables), regular exercise, and getting enough sleep. Healthy eating, staying physically active, and prioritizing sleep can help seniors maintain optimal physical and mental health. Moreover, it’s essential to stay hydrated and avoid excessive consumption of alcohol and use of tobacco.

Stay Mentally Active

Keeping your mind active is just as important as staying physically active. Engaging in activities that challenge your brain, such as puzzles, reading, learning a new language, or pursuing a hobby, can help maintain cognitive function and prevent conditions like dementia. Socializing with friends and family is also crucial for the mental well-being of older adults.

Regular Check-Ups and Preventive Care

Regular health check-ups and preventive care are essential for catching potential health issues early on. Make sure to visit your healthcare provider for routine screenings and vaccinations. Managing chronic conditions and taking prescribed medications as directed is also crucial for maintaining health in old age.

Maintain a Strong Social Network

Social connections play a vital role in healthy aging. Staying connected with friends and loved ones can reduce feelings of loneliness and depression. Joining clubs, participating in community events, and volunteering can help you stay socially active and engaged.

Adapt to Changing Needs

As we age, our needs and abilities change. It’s essential to adapt to these changes and seek assistance when necessary. This might include considering assisted living or memory care services if you or a loved one faces increasing healthcare needs. Nye Health Services, with its award-winning health and wellness services, is here to provide tailored care and support.

Find Purpose and Joy

Perhaps one of the most significant secrets to healthy aging is finding purpose and joy in life. Engaging in activities you’re passionate about, setting goals, and staying optimistic can significantly impact your overall well-being. Remember, age is just a number, and there’s always room for new experiences and adventures. While there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to the question of what makes for a healthy old age, these key factors can significantly contribute to your overall well-being as you age.

Navigating the Costs of Assisted Living: Tips for Financial Planning

Navigating the Costs of Assisted Living: Tips for Financial Planning

Are you or a loved one considering a move to an assisted living community but feeling overwhelmed by the high monthly expenses associated with it? While Medicare doesn’t cover assisted living costs, there are several financial planning options to explore. At Nye Health Services, we understand the importance of finding the right plan for you and your family members. Here are some tips to help you finance this transition and make assisted living a more feasible option.

Navigating the Costs of Assisted Living: Tips for Financial Planning

Medicaid

Medicaid can offer some relief in covering assisted living expenses, but the availability of coverage varies by state. In Nebraska, the Aged and Disabled Medicaid Waiver is one such program that provides assistance for assisted living.

To qualify for this waiver in Nebraska, you must be at least 65 years old (or have a disability preventing independent living), meet specific income and asset limits, and have a medically qualified need.

Income requirements can be met through two options:

  1. Categorical need: This requires an annual income below the Federal Poverty Level (FPL).
  2. Medical need: Residents must have less than approximately $400 remaining per month after paying medical expenses, irrespective of total income.

Applicants for the Aged and Disabled Medicaid Waiver should also have less than $4,000 in countable assets, regardless of the type of need they apply for.

Veterans’ Benefits

If you’re a veteran, financial assistance for assisted living is available through the VA and other sources. The VA provides various long-term care services, including assistance in assisted living communities, nursing homes, and private homes. Veterans can receive support with activities of daily living, physical therapy, and round-the-clock care when living in an assisted living community.

To be eligible, veterans must be receiving healthcare through the VA, and the services should be considered necessary for their specific situation. While the VA generally covers a portion of the overall cost, full coverage is rare, and you may need to explore Medicaid or private insurance to help pay for assisted living.

Private Long-Term Care Insurance

Private long-term care insurance can be a valuable resource if you don’t qualify for Medicaid or veterans’ benefits. Policies can differ significantly in terms of coverage and benefits, but they often provide the best option for covering a significant portion of assisted living expenses.

Before making any decisions, carefully review your policy to understand the coverage you’re eligible for and the monthly premiums you’ll need to pay. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to seek assistance from your insurance provider or meet with an advocate or case manager to explore your options further.
